Oyster Bay Golf Links Sunset Beach, NC
Larry Young has created what many believe to be a magnificent golfing buffet with the Legends courses. For over twenty years, it has been a favorite and a must-play. Don't let the age fool you! Oyster Bay is known as the best shot-makers course in the area. It combines a rare blend of strategic and heroic golfing challenges. Variety is the name of the game with no two holes even close to being the same. The cavernous bunkers, wide undulating greens, and lengthy hearty par-4's is a true test of your golfing skills.
The course features a 71.6 course rating and a slope of 134. Architect Dan Maples lent a hand to Young in developing the course and in turn took it up a notch. The course is very pleasing to the eye, with the back nine featuring two island-greens. There is also the less-than-subtle maritime setting which has you playing through shaded forests and around open marshes and lakes.
The most unique feature: the oyster shell lined tee boxes. This finishing design touch on the course really makes you feel as though you're playing right on the shore line. Another unique feature is the alternate green provided on the par-4 3rd hole, which requires a long accurate drive. The second shot here will require a wood to mid-iron. The green here is designated daily so don't jump the gun and swing until you make note of where the flagstick is.
The bunkers are very severe, plentiful, and large. The greens seem to be breathing, with the severe massive slopes. Don't be surprised if you find yourself stuck on some of the holes for a good ten or fifteen minutes.
As a whole, the greens at Oyster Bay will chew up your golfing dreams if you're not careful with your pin placement. Hole 15 is a par 3 that can play anywhere from a 3-wood to a short iron depending on the tee markers and wind conditions on the day of play. As a helpful hint, make sure you favor the left side of the green. Hole 17 gave the course its name. With oyster shells lining the island green, select the club and take your best shot. The par-4 13th hole will be the most talked about because it plays tightly along a lake to the right before heading to a green steeply elevated with a tall concrete wall lining the right side. At just 330 yards from the back tees, it is also guarded by a large bunker in the front that will forced you to strategically avoid on both the drive and the approach shot.
Oyster Bay is a worthy golfing selection. With island greens, lakes, marshes, and monumental holes, you'll never find yourself bored.
