Course Review

Beechwood

Aberdeen Country Club Beachwood, which opened in 1968, continues to bring in curious golfers who leave ultimately satisfied with their day here. A Gene Hamm design, this course boasts excellence, creativity, and above all, fun.

The greatest thing about Beachwood, and something that sets it apart from all the other Grand Strand courses, is the availability of excellent practice facilities. You'll find an all-grass driving range as well as putting and chipping greens at the entrance to both the front and back nines, all of which are open to the public.

Beachwood also is more than capable of boasting the best fairways on the beach. The fairways are never less than magnificent, as well as fairly wide. Water only comes into play on a few holes. The first couple of holes give you time to warm up and get set for the rest of the course. You'll be eased into Beachwood with a few avoidances of water and sand in an effort to gear you up for what is to come. When you get to hole five, you'll understand what we're talking about.

This fifth hole is a challenging one, with water protecting the green on the right. This will force you to make a left to right shot into the greens center. Be careful, however, because a wayward shot to the left will have you hunting in the trees. You won't get a break after the fifth because you step right up to the course's most difficult hole. This 6th hole will require you to make a drive to what is possibly the most narrow fairway on the course. The green here is also
